The Trademarkroom has been providing trade mark protection services for over 15 years. In this time, our Clients have achieved amazing success in their chosen areas.
It is important for aspiring business owners to see success while they are working hard to build their own businesses, therefore we would like to shine the spotlight on some of the Trademarkroom’s success stories and delve deeper into the thoughts and story of the brains behind these businesses.
Today’s spotlight is on Pall Mall Barbers. Founder Richard Marshall has been a longstanding Trademarkroom client and was kind enough to reflect for us.
Please tell us about your business and the background on how it all started!
Pall Mall Barbers is a gentleman’s grooming company serving London since 1896. When I bought the business 18 years ago, the history of the business became apparent when renovating the Trafalgar Square barber shop. It was amazing to discover that the business could be the oldest barbers in the world!
The business has now built to have 8 shops in and around London and a shop based in the Rockefeller Centre in New York. We also have released a line of hair care, shaving and styling products that can be accessed by our clients across the world.
Why did you feel filing your brand as a registered trade mark was important enough to make it a priority?
For me, trademarking is important. An early lesson I learnt when developing the business was to ensure that the business’s intellectual property is protected.
Early on, I recognised that this would be important to build a strong brand – and therefore I made it a priority.
Did you have any goals when it came to trade mark protection?
I didn’t necessarily have an particular goals with this, only to make sure the brand I was building was a strong as possible . It was the next right thing to prioritise protecting the brand with a trade mark.
What did you learn during the application process?
The key element that I learnt about was the classes. It was a part of the process that I wasn’t aware of before and is very important part of the process, as it can influence the success level of applications.
As I have built the brand internationally, I have also learnt the importance of a game plan to ensure I was on the ball with putting the international protection in place as the business expands.
How did the Trademarkroom help you with the process?
I have engaged the Trademarkroom now for a number of years and they have been great in supporting me with the whole process, sorting the paperwork and getting in place for me.
Do you have any advice for fellow business owners when it comes to trade marks?
The main piece of advice would be to get your plan of action in place and make sure it matches your expansion goals. Once you have this plan of action in place, you will know exactly what you need and when you need it.
