The social media company Snapchat, now known as Snap, has locked horns with the US Trade Mark Office over a trade mark application for the word ‘Spectacles’.
The initial application was filed to the US Trade Mark Office 2016 and was to cover the word ‘spectacles’ for Snaps’ digital eyewear products.
The US Trade Mark Office rejected the application on the grounds that it is too generic and descriptive of the products filed for.
Trying to change this, Snap has sued the US Trade Mark Office on the grounds that the rejection of the application was unfounded as the word ‘spectacles’ was not lacking in distinctive character and therefore should be accepted for registration.
It will be interesting to see how this case will develop and whether it will be one that settles behind closed doors.
