Ringo Starr’s Trade Mark Dispute

The Beatles drummer Ringo Starr has recently undergone a trade mark dispute with a sex toy manufacturer selling the product: ‘ring o’.

The basis of the case is that the product name was considered highly similar to that of Starrs name and therefore it is likely to cause indirect confusion for the public in believing the toy is associated in some way to Starr.

It could also be argued that the nature of the product could result in damage to the reputation and goodwill associated with Starrs name.

However, following careful consideration it has been reported that Starr has removed his complaints after agreeing to solve the decision amicably.

The decision consists of the manufacturer of the product noting that they will avoid confusion between the product and Starr; add a space between the Ring and the O element of the mark; as well as make no reference to Starr on the packaging, adverts or product.

If you have any questions regarding the above or would like to discuss trade marks further please do not hesitate to contact the Trademarkroom team today.
