Rebekah Vardy succeeds in registers ‘Wagatha Christie’ as UK trade mark

Someone who many will now know of, Rebekah Vardy has taken steps to recover from the significant loss in her previous legal claim.

Rebekah Vardy, wife of footballer Jamie Vardy, filed legal proceedings against fellow WAG Colleen Rooney for defamation. This claim was filed after Colleen accused Rebekah of spreading false rumours about her in the papers.

The case went viral in the media, inspiring documentaries, a Channel 4 documentary and a west end play. During the frenzy of the case, the phrase ‘Wagatha Christie’ was coined, referencing the investigative actions of Rooney to find out who was selling the stories to the papers.

Despite losing her claim in July, and being order to pay nearly £1.5 million in legal costs to Rooney, Vardy isn’t ready to let go of the matter just yet.

Her trade mark application for the phrase ‘Wagatha Christie’ was successfully registered in August 2022 for a wide range of goods and services, including cosmetics, household items and broadcasting services.

This means that anyone looking to use the name on these items or for these services will have to seek permission from Vardy, which is likely to come with a price tag.

The application process wasn’t completely successful as the bedding brand Christy opposed some household and clothing items which were then removed.
