In short, yes it can!
Don’t be fooled into thinking though that this happens without any action from you!
When a trade mark is successfully registered, it is initially registered for 10 years. There is no need to do anything in this 10 years. Once the 10 years is coming to an end, you will be notified to renew your trade mark.
There will be fees to pay and this does renew your mark for a further 10 years, when again the mark must be renewed for a fee.
Essentially this could go on forever. However, there is cases where marks are removed from the register even if the renewals are maintained. This is where a mark no longer complies with the criteria of a trade mark.
This could be that a mark has become generic or hasn’t been used sufficiently and therefore has been challenged.
